Non Epileptic Attack Disorder

Are you affected by N.E.A.D?

We are a non profit making group based in Cannock in Staffordshire; supporting anyone with the condition and those around them.

We organise monthly meetings and can offer support, advice and guidance. We also have access to financial help, and disability benefit advice.

WHAT IS NEAD ?

N.E.A.D is a condition causing seizures, blackouts, absences or uncontrollable movements of limbs and muscles.

These seizures can have some of the characteristics of an epileptic seizure and can be just as distressing.

The difference is, that non epileptic seizures are not caused by abnormalities in the brain.

They are considered to be of psychological cause. Sometimes, sufferers have had a significant trauma and these seizures can follow a distressing or traumatic event.

This could be a result of an emotional or a physical life changing event. Unlike epilepsy, they do not require anti epileptic medication as it has been proven to be unsuccessful in treating the condition.

Some other known names for the condition include:

Functional Seizure Disorder

Pseudoseizures

Conversion Disorder

Psychogenic Seizure Disorder

Helen Borton

I have had NEAD for 14 years from the age of 17.

This group means so much to me as the condition is so misunderstood and unknown by those who should know about it.  Hopefully with campaigning and hard work, we can get the word out about NEAD.

My name is Phil Tittensor. I am the Lead Epilepsy Nurse for Wolverhampton NHS Foundation Trust. I care for many patients with NEAD in and around Cannock.

I am passionate about supporting and treating those with NEAD.  I try where possible to attend most NEADsupport meetings to support Helen and the group with medical assistance and professional advice.
